La Bella Napoli continues its music series with a combined spectacle of music and magic starring acclaimed tenor, Joe Spinella. As a Tribute to Pavarotti, favorite arias and standards from the great maestro's repertoire are performed with a dash of real magic.
Patrons get a bit of that concert experience while Spinella crafts his illusions, producing handkerchiefs from nowhere, making wine bottles disappear and defying the laws of physics. All the while he maintains his Pavarotti character with musicality and fun.
"It's not like your typical magic show," said Spinella. "This is a story and the magic occurs as a result of the great songs and the story of those songs."
Although he studied magic all his life, Spinella admits he'd barely sung a note in his life until college. Pushed into voice lessons in his second year of college, he soon earned a scholarship at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music.
"I realized I didn't know anything about singing," said Spinella. "But I did know that if I didn't train really well I would never really make anything of myself."
Training took Spinella to the Metropolitan Opera where he studied voice under Joan Dornemann, who coached Luciano Pavarotti. Spinella's career soared with concerts and engagements in Europe and in the United States.
"One of the most memorable performances for me, I think, is Lucia di Lammermoor with the Israeli Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta," states Spinella about his operatic work.
But that's just part of the music story. Spinella collaborated with Joseph Vulpis, (Lady Gaga's long time song writer and musical producer), on a new single included in his 'illusionAria' show. Entitled 'Trust in Me,' this song was considered for a Grammy Award in three categories; Best New Artist, Song of the Year and Producer of the Year for 2013. His album, Spinella Tenor of Illusions is available on iTunes.
Today Spinella represents what some have deemed the "new breed" of tenor, those singers that take operatic tradition and merge them with popular music and populist performance.
"The new breed of tenor is not the one that stands up there on the stage and just sings," said Spinella. "It's that tenor that can transfer over to any genre of music."
Two seating times are available for his Pavarotti Tribute show at 5:00pm and 8:00pm. Reservations are required. Reservations can be made through the office at 702-202-6688 or online at https://labellalv.com/menu. The show starts after food service.
