ST PETE TIMES Sarasota show features work by disabled artists
By Lennie Bennett, Times Art Critic
In print: Thursday, August 28, 2008

VSA arts is an international program founded in 1974 by Jean Kennedy Smith to encourage and support arts programs for people with disabilities. It has enriched the lives of those specific individuals as well as a larger population, teaching us all that creativity has no boundaries or limitations.
That point is brought home in an exhibition at Edfish Galleries, 3663 Webber St., Sarasota, where 15 adult artists with mental and physical disabilities show paintings, sculpture and mixed media works through Sept. 12. Shown is Brilliant Sunset, by an artist who signs himself Mr. B. The exhibit was organized by VSA arts of Florida and gallery owner Ed Walsh, who says, "There are VSA arts programs in many counties, but unfortunately Sarasota isn't one of them. Hopefully this will bring awareness of the need for one." Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. (941) 706-2659
