Lucky 7

Sarasota Sister Cities Association

By Cliff Roles

Miss Nimmo. That was her name. She was my French teacher when I was eleven. Mid-thirties, blonde, curvaceous, voluptuous. Slim, tanned legs in stiletto heels. A cross between Beyoncé and Jessica Rabbit. It’s a wonder I ever learned any French — I would gaze at her lovingly with a blank stare on my…

Great Accomplishments

As we head into the final week of the presidential campaign, it's helpful to remember that every major American achievement came as the result of liberal leadership, including (but hardly limited to):

  • The Declaration of Independence
  • The Bill of Rights
  • The abolition of slavery
  • Recovery from the Great Depression (Part 1)
  • Victory in WWII
  • The Civil Rights Movement
  • The Apollo Program

Educational Record/War Heroism

Let's talk about a man....

  • ...Who was near the bottom of his class at the Academy....
  • ...Who went on to become a highly-praised war hero....
  • ...Who, in '8, was nominated by the Republicans for the presidency.
  • ...Who is now considered by historians to have been one of the worst presidents we've ever had.

I'm referring, of course, to Ulysses S. Grant.

We Band of Brothers

As noted in my "Today in Arts History" blog post, today is St. Crispin's Day, so I thought I'd revisit one of the most famous speeches in the theatrical canon:

What's he that wishes so? My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin;

If we are mark'd to die, we are enow

To do our country loss; and if to live,

The fewer men, the greater share of honour.

God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.

By Jove, I am not…

A decent family man

John McCain received a lot of press recently for correcting one of his supporters who said that she didn't like Barack Obama because, "He's a Arab." McCain replied, "No, Ma'am. He's a decent family man...citizen...."

Well, fine.

But why has no one seemed to notice that McCain has positioned "Arab" as antithetical to "decent family man" and "citizen"?

There are about 240 million Arabs in the world. Many of… Continue

Failure of Education

The public schools worked very well for a very long time. They started to go wrong when they changed the way they taught reading and spelling.

When I was in grade school, we were taught to "sound out" words. We were taught the basic rules and then taught which words were the exceptions. This taught us how to teach ourselves -- if we encountered a new word in print, we could probably figure out how to pronounce it; if we heard a new word, we could probably figure out how to spell it.… Continue

Numbers Tell the Story

The latest Gallup Poll tells us that 75% OF Americans disapprove of GW Bush's performance as president.

Abraham Lincoln said that "You can fool all of the people some of the time." Now, thanks to Gallup, we know the number of people who can be fooled all of the time: 25%.
