Bobby is a charming New York bachelor about to turn 35, and as he faces his birthday, his married friends are bound and determined to change the bachelor part. But between fiercly competitive Harry and Sarah, divorced-but-cohabitating Peter and Susan, "square" Jenny and David, terrified Amy and fiance Paul, and jaded Joanne with third husband Larry, Bobby's not quite sure what to make of marriage.

And then there are the women Bobby's dating. Is flighty flight attendant April more than a one night stand? Maybe Kathy, as out of place as she feels in New York, can help Bobby find his own place in the world. Then again, there's Marta--the self-declared soul of New York--who may know just what Bobby's real problem is.

Mix in equal amounts of frantic humor, touching honesty, and the angst of being alone in a crowd, and you have George Furth and Stephen Sondheim's musical of independance and commitment, isolation and connection:
