A little about me (so that you know I am a real person and not a spammer!)
Barbara has been an artist most of her life, starting at around the age of nine. Around the age of 15 her parents enrolled her in a correspondence art program with the Art Instruction Schools and accredited art program based in Minneapolis. After high school she attended the Art Institute of Chicago. She was a traditional artist for many years, but always had a passion for abstract and expressionism. In 2000 she decided to concentrate on the abstract. Wanting another artist’s opinion of her work she invited popular artist Jerry Lanham (based out of Orlando) to critique her paintings. He basically said, “I never knew you could do this!” With his encouragement she pursued her passion.
“I drew inspiration from artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock.” Joan Mitchell was also an artist I admired. She was one of the first female abstract artists to hit the art scene in the 1950s, which at that time was dominated by male artists. I also admire Gerard Stricher an abstract artist still creating today. I love color and movement and texture in my work.
Barbara is currently a member of the Arts Alliance of Lemon bay, the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Sarasota, the Sarasota Art Center and the Visual Art Center in Punta Gorda.
