Just in NYC and the ticket sales are brisk (for the half-price tix)...was in several full houses, but have no idea how many were papered (like Pal Joey revival with a different lead than in the printed program)...my sense is that B'way will survive the crisis, as it has, historically, but that the chancy, edgy, new works will not get much exposure except from the Roundabout Theatre group....even there, the used-to-be-edgy Streamers in the wake of Viet Nam, is more of a classic than a new work. Did a Murder Mystery Dinner gig last night in Venice. Not exactly Shakespeare, but a lot of fun for the party-goers.

Theatre Odyssey's auditions for the 2009 Ten-Minute Play Festival will be in January. The Festival has begun to receive national attention, and it's great to be part of an event that gives you a starring role and even shares the profits! If you aren't on our mailing list, send us a line! If you want, include your basic statistics (e.g., Male, 55, etc.). We're always considering new projects and quality actors.

'Tale' to end Broadway run

By Jay Handelman

The current financial crisis and lagging ticket sales are bringing an early end to the Broadway run of “A Tale of Two Cities.”

'Tale of Two Cities" is closing. The musical by Jill Santoriello, which had its premiere at Sarasota's Asolo Repertory Theatre last fall, will close Nov. 16 after 68 performances and 33 previews.

The musical, directed by Warren Carlyle, opened Sept. 18 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre with an audience that included dozens of board members and supporters of the Asolo. A tour group also traveled to New York to see the show a few weeks later.

Critics savaged the show, which is expected to lose most of of its $16 million cost. Box office reports indicated the show sold only about 45 percent of available tickets last week.

“Tale” is one of many shows that has been struggling in the wake of the current financial crisis. Three Tony Award-winning musicals -- “Hairspray,” “Spamalot” and “Spring Awakening” -- have announced they will close in January. Other shows also are reported to be struggling.

A statement from producers, reported by Playbill.com, cited “the recent recession and stock market decline which have resulted in weaker ticket buying traffic patterns and steep discounting in the industry."

Santoriello worked for more than 20 years on the show, which marked her Broadway debut.
