In 2005, at nineteen years of age, Joyce Yang was awarded the silver medal at the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The prize package included a cash award, three years of U.S. concert engagements, and a recording contract. The youngest of the Cliburn competitors, she is featured in In the Heart of Music, a film documentary about the Competition. Of her spectacular finish at one of the world's most prestigious showcases for young talent, she told reporters, "I'm still dreaming."
The dream continued that summer as Joyce Yang appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Aspen Symphony, and she opened the season of the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center. In 2006, Joyce made her New York Philharmonic debut in Avery Fisher Hall. She has performed with the symphonies in Houston, Indianapolis, Fort Worth, Colorado, Kansas City, Colorado Springs, and Orlando, as well as numerous recitals throughout North America and in Europe, including appearances at the Kennedy Center for the Washington Performing Arts Society and the Tonhalle in Zurich, Switzerland.
Born in Seoul, Korea, Joyce received her first piano as a present on her fourth birthday. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram said of her playing, "Yang showed a glimpse of what we hope piano performance will be like in the 21st century: imaginative, technically brilliant, connected to the audience and historically aware ... The newest star on the piano horizon ..." Call the Historic Asolo Box Office for tickets: 941.360.7399. $35, $30,$25.
